Fr Francis Clifton SJ (alias/vere Fanning) was born 6 November 1742, in London, England. He entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus at Watten (France), on 7 September 1762. He was for many years Confessor to the English Nuns of the Holy Sepulchre, Liege, and, after their emigration to England in 1794, at Dean’s House, Salisbury, and afterwards at Newhall, Chelmsford. He died in London, on 23 May 1812, and was buried at old St Pancras’ churchyard.
