As a child he was sent to Hodder, entering there on 16 September, 1880. He was sent up to the College in due course, but left when he was in Grammar, seemingly on account of ill-health. Clutton returned in 1889 as a lay philosopher, winning the first prize in philosophy at the end of the year. In his second year he occupied the position of Senior Philosopher. At the end of the term he joined the novitiate at Manresa on 7 September 1891. Clutton had been suffering from eye trouble and it was therefore decided to accelerate his course with a view to early ordination. After two years’ philosophy at St Mary’s Hall he went straight to theology, being ordained at St Beuno’s on 31 July 1898. After ordination Fr Clutton stayed on at St Beuno’s doing supply work, and was in charge of the Denbigh Mission from 1900-1901. In 1902 he moved to St Ignatius’, Preston, where he spent six years performing district work. After his tertianship at Tullabeg (1908-1909) he was appointed to Bournemouth, where he stayed until 1934, with the exception of one year as Min. Dom. at St. Ignatius’. In 1934 he moved to Farm Street, London, and his eye trouble and general health worsened. By 1940 he felt that he could no longer face the strain of life in London, and went as chaplain to the Sacred Heart novices, evacuated from Roehampton to Kinross. After a few months he moved to Manresa, and in February 1942 was appointed Spiritual Father at Heythrop. He retained the post for a year and a half, when his rapidly failing health compelled a change and he moved in September 1943 to Wimbledon. Fr Roger Clutton died, following a long illness, at St Anthony’s Hospital, North Cheam, on 15 November 1945. </Nationality>
