Fr John Couche SJ was born 14 April 1744, at Tolfrey (Cornwall), England, to William Couche and his wife, daughter of Charles Hoskins of Ibberton, Dorset. He made his humanity studies at St Omer’s College, and entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus at Watten (France), on 7 December 1762. Having served the missions of Canford and Lulworth Castle (Dorset), he spent the last 22 years of his missionary life at Southend, Soberton (Hampshire), and died at Greenwich (London) on 29 December 1813.
