John Cuddon SJ was born 3 February 1821, in Bungay (Suffolk), England. He made his humanity studies at Stonyhurst College, and entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus at Hodder, on 7 September 1837. In October 1841 he matriculated at the London University, and was sent to Namur for his philosophy. He returned to England in March 1843, and was placed in a religious asylum at Tirlemont, Belgium, on 8 June 1844. He remained at the asylum until his death, on 5 August 1875.
