He served three years in the First World War. After this period he worked as a clerk for a year or so, likely in some firm of shipping which absorbed large numbers of young men in Liverpool at that time.

He joined the novitiate at Manresa House at Roehampton as a brother novice on 14 August 1920. He was to take his final vows on 15 August twelve years later.

His appointments in the earlier years in the Society were as Sacristan at Stonyhurst (1922-23), ad dom at Mount St Mary’s College, ad dom and later Refectorian at St Beuno’s (1924-29), ad omnia at Wimbledon College (1922-23). He then served as assistant refectorian at Liverpool (1936-39), in various capacities at Beaumont College (1940-32), Sacristan again at Stonyhurst (1942-43); ad Dom at Wimbledon (1943-46) and Rainhill from 1944 to 1947.

From 1947 – 1955 he was in Preston at St Walburge’s Church with a group of older fathers, and he enjoyed visiting St Wilfrid’s Church and meeting with the younger priests and scholastics. Br Pope at this time found a good outlet for pastoral work with teenagers in the youth club at St Walburge’s. He had always been a keen and expert referee at football and was interested in their other activities, such as boxing.

From 1955-1958 he was positioned back at Mount St Mary’s, followed by four years at St Aloysius’, Oxford. Following this, he went to St Francis Xavier’s, Liverpool, from 1972-1977. For the last five years of his life he moved to St John’s Convent, Kiln Green, where he was looked after by nuns. He died there on 5 August 1982. </Nationality>
