Christopher Grene was born in 1629 in Kilkenny, Ireland. His parents, George Green and Jane Tempest, had moved there to escape persecution in England. He made his early studies in Ireland and his humanities at St Omer’s College. He entered the English College, Rome, for his higher course 20 October 1647. He was ordained priest 7 September 1653 and was sent to England 8 April 1654. He entered the Society 7 September 1658 and was professed of the four vows 2 February 1669. He was English Penitentiary at Loreto and then at St Peter’s, Rome. In 1692 he was appointed Confessor at the English College, Rome, and died there 11 November 1697, age 68. Grene rendered great service in the Cause of the English Martyrs by collecting and handing down the scattered records of their sufferings as the collection, once held at Stonyhurst College and now at the British Jesuit Archives, testifies (ref. ABSI/ST/C).
