He was educated at Preston Catholic College and entered the Society on leaving secondary school in 1963. After two years' novitiate he made his first vows and then studied philosophy at Heythrop College, Oxfordshire, for three years. From there he went to Campion Hall, Oxford, and studied for a BA in English language and literature. After completing that degree he taught English and Religious Studies at Wimbledon College for two years and then studied Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome, 1973 to 1976. He was ordained deacon in Rome in the spring of 1976 and priest in July of the same year in Preston, Lancashire. During the following year he studied theology in London and obtained a Master's degree in systematic theology at London University. He then taught English and Religious Studies at Mount St Mary's College for two years before spending two years as socius to the Director of Novices of the British Province in Birmingham. In 1981 he began to work as an assistant editor for the journals of spirituality, 'The Way' and 'The Way Supplement', at Campion House, Osterley, before going to India for Tertianship in January 1982. He made his final vows as a Jesuit in the spring of 1983. From 1983 to 1994 he worked as co-editor of the same two journals, taught spirituality at Heythrop College, University of London, and was involved in various kinds of pastoral ministry, notably retreats and spiritual direction. During that time he also published two books on spirituality: 'Eyes to see, ears to hear: an introduction to Ignatian spirituality' (1990) and 'Dance to the music of the spirit: the art of discernment' (1992) as well as numerous articles. In 1994 he took up the post of director of novices and continued to teach spirituality at Heythrop College. He requested to be released from this post in December 1995 and from March 1995 lived outside a Jesuit community. In February 1997 he was granted leave of absence for a year from the Society and on 19 January 2000 he left the Society.</Nationality>
