He took a BSc (Engineering) at University College Natal in 1937 and, after a few months working at the Supermarine Works in Southampton, went to Osterley. He entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus on 7 September 1938 at Roehampton, took his first vows at St Beuno’s in 1940 and then went to Heythrop Oxon for philosophy. He taught at the Mount (1944-1946) and returned for theology to Heythrop where he was ordained on 8 September 1949. After tertianship at St Beuno’s and a year’s teaching at Wimbledon he returned in 1952 to South Africa. He taught mathematics at St Aidan’s until 1959 and then at Rhodes University where he was also University chaplain. In 1967 he went to Notre Dame University, Indiana, for studies in mathematics, returning the same year to Rhodes University. He retired from the university in 1975 and took over a parish in Grahamstown. In 1979 he became chaplain at the Assumption convent, Grahamstown, and continued with pastoral work as far as indifferent health would allow. Shortly before his death he went into hospital in Port Elizabeth for observation; he died there on 14 November 1986. </Nationality>
