Fr Francis Brownbill SJ was born 5 November 1793, at Gillmoss (Lancashire), England. He was educated at Stonyhurst College, and entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus at Hodder (Lancashire), 7 September 1813. After the usual scholastic course, he was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in Dublin, Ireland, in December 1819. He then filled the offices of Prefect, Professor of Mathematics, and became Minister of Stonyhurst. He was made a Spiritual Coadjutor on 15 August 1834, and Superior of the Residence of St Michael on 11 August 1835. From 1838 to 1842, when he was again appointed Minister of Stonyhurst College, he was both missioner and Superior of St George’s Residence (Worcester), and likewise Superior of the College of St Francis Xavier. In September 1847 he became Superior at St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst. From 6 September 1843 until 1863, he was missioner at Newhall, Chelmsford. In December 1864 he was Superior at the Little College, Hodder. His health started to decline, and he was eventually removed to Stonyhurst College, where he died on 13 May 1875.
