Fr Thomas Tracy Clarke SJ was born 4, 25 or 31 July 1802, in Dublin, Ireland. He made his humanity studies at Stonyhurst and Maynooth Colleges, and entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus at Montrouge (France), on 7 September 1823. From 1825 until 8 December 1829, he was master at Hodder school, and on 24 September 1836 was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest on 24 September 1836, at Stonyhurst, by Bishop John Briggs. Between 1837-1839 he was missioner at Norwich, Preston, and Pontefract, and, after his Tertianship in 1840, was appointed Professor of History and Librarian at Stonyhurst College. He was professed of the four vows 2 February 1843 or 1844, and on 28 August 1845 was made Master of Novices at Hodder. He held this office until September 1860, when declining health rendered a change necessary, and he was succeeded by Fr Alfred Weld SJ. He was subsequently a preacher in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, London, for a short time, and died at the Residence of St Ignatius’ College, in Hill Street, London, on 11 January 1862.
