He had a sister, Jean (c.1927-2006), four years younger than himself. The family moved to Beckenham in Kent. After schooling, which had been disrupted by TB and long spells in hospital, Jack (as he was known) trained as a mechanic and during World War II worked in the local munitions factory. Jack was received into the Catholic Church on 15 July 1946 and was confirmed at St George's Cathedral, London on 6 October 1946.

Attracted to life as a religious brother, Jack joined the Society of Jesus. He came to Manresa House at Roehampton in February 1949 and became a novice in August that year. He took his first vows on 15 August 1951.

His first assignment after taking vows was to Heythrop College, Oxon, where he made his last vows on 15 August 1959. Motor vehicle maintenance was Jack's first responsibility, but he also had oversight of the transition from a generator to the national grid, and later the installation of a telephone system.

Leaving Heythrop he spent some years in the noviceship community, in its various locations. He moved to Woodhall House, Scotland, in December 1968 and then moved to Southwell House in London in September 1970. In October 1972 he moved to Loyola Hall, Rainhill and then to Harborne, Birmingham in 1977, before going to Farm Street, London in June 1980. His task continued to be to make things work and to fix them when they stopped working.

In September 2007 he moved permanently to the Corpus Christi Jesuit Community at Boscombe, where he died on 11 October 2015. His Requiem Mass at Corpus Christi Church, Boscombe, was celebrated on 30 October 2015.</Nationality>
