Fr Henry James Corry SJ was born 19 May 1826, in Preston, England. He made his humanities at Stonyhurst College, and entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus 7 September 1843. After teaching and filling the office of Prefect, he was ordained at St Beuno’s College on 21 September 1852, in his third year’s theology. In March 1854, he was sent to the Westminster mission, and after working in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Farm Street, London, for a few months, was appointed to the new College of the Society of Jesus, opened in Charlotte Street, Glasgow, in August 1858. In July 1860 he was sent as missioner to Edinburgh. He was professed of the four vows on 2 February 1861. In December 1864 he was removed to Lulworth Castle mission. In 1872 he became the first missioner at Oxford, on that mission being resumed by the Society, and was soon afterwards appointed Socius to Fr Provincial Robert Whitty SJ. In 1873 his health gave way, and after a long and painful illness, he died at St Francis Xavier’s College, Liverpool, on 20 February 1874.
