Fr Francis de Zulueta came from a distinguished Spanish family settled in Great Britain. He was the son of Pedro José Count de Torre Diaz, and was the uncle of Cardinal Merry del Val and his brother, the former Spanish Ambassador at London, Vienna and the Vatican. He was born 29 June 1853 in London and was educated at Beaumont. He entered the Society 14 October 1871 at Roehampton. When he had finished his humanities he was sent to St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst, to study Philosophy until 1877. After a period of teaching at Mount St Mary’s College, Beaumont and Stonyhurst, he went to St Beuno’s College in Wales for his four year course of Theology, and he was ordained a priest there 20 September 1885. He did his third year of probation at Manresa House, Roehampton, and took his vows as Spiritual Coadjutor 2 February 1889 at Mount St Mary’s. As a priest he worked on the Missions at Manchester, Bournemouth, Wimbledon, and for a time at Farm Street. It was soon realised that his vocation lay in giving retreats, and writing and composing music. Accordingly, from 1904 until his death he was mostly at Manresa, engaged in his numerous writings and correspondence. He died at Manresa 11 January 1937.
