Initially ordained as an Anglican priest in 1934, he was received into the Catholic Church in 1936 and was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1940. He was RC Coadjutor Bishop of Middlesbrough (1964-1964), before being appointed RC Bishop of Leeds on 25 April 1966 and installed on 27 June 1966. He retired on 12 July 1985 and died 21 February 1998. His memoir, In Truth and Love, was published posthumously in 1990.
