Walter Montagu was born on 7 May 1886 at Coleraine, Derry, the fifth of seven sons, who were all educated at Stonyhurst and of whom five joined the army or the navy. Montagu entered the Society on 8 September 1903 at Manresa where he did his noviceship and juniorate, then did two years of philosophy at the Seminary. He went to St John’s Beaumont in 1909, and remained there for six years. He started his theology at St Beuno’s in 1915, and was ordained by dispensation on 28 April 1918 and left for France as an Army Chaplain on 21 May 1918. On 31 July 1918 (St Ignatius’ Day) he said Mass in the old Jesuit chapel in St Omers. On 28 October 1918 he received very severe wounds, and died after an operation on the 31 October 1918. He was buried in the British Cemetery.
