His father was a solicitor in a firm of Catholic solicitors, and King’s brother and nephew also joined the family firm. Two of King’s sisters became nuns. The family was proud of its connection with the martyr Nicholas Garlick, martyred at Derby in 1588. King was educated at Mount St Mary’s from 1864 and in 1869 he went to Stonyhurst. He left Stonyhurst on 14 June 1872 and on 8 September 1872 he entered the novitiate at Roehampton. He then studied Philosophy at St Mary’s for three years, then did two years of teaching at St Francis Xavier’s, Liverpool. From 1880-1882 he taught at Stonyhurst and on 20 September 1885 he was ordained priest at St Beuno’s. Thereafter he was involved in parish work at Manchester, Liverpool, Oxford and Bristol. He was Socius to the Provincial Fr John Gerard 1898-1900 and was Spiritual Father at Beaumont for 11 years 1901-1912.

In July 1914 he was appointed to take over the Stonyhurst Mission but after war was declared he was called up to be an army chaplain in September of that year, and was in France by November. He spent almost the entire war years there, mainly at GHQ until he was demobilized on 9 April 1919. He wrote frequent and informative letters from the Front. He won the Military Cross in 1917 and was presented it by King George V on 6 February 1918.

After the war King was Superior of the Mission at Trenchard Street in Bristol. In April 1924 he was appointed to be Spiritual Father at Stonyhurst, which position he held until he died on 1 October 1931.</Nationality>
