Fr Charles Walter Clifford SJ was born 26 April 1804, at Ugbrooke Park (Devon), England, to Lord Charles Clifford, and his wife Eleanora Mary, daughter of Henry, eighth Lord Arundell of Wardour. He made his humanity studies at Stonyhurst College, his higher course at the Roman College, and entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus at St Andrew’s Novitiate on 26 August or 1 November 1823. Returning to Stonyhurst College, he also, as his cousin Fr Walter Clifford had done, made a public defence of universal theology, and was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest by Bishop Thomas Penswick, on 22 September 1832. After teaching philosophy at the College, he was sent to the Preston mission on 9 September 1835, and from thence to Wardour Castle, on 20 July 1836. He sailed for Madurai, India, on 20 February 1841, and after working there, he drowned in the Cauvery river, below the fortress of Tiruchirappalli, on 21 or 22 May 1844.
