English lawyer, social philosopher, author, and statesman. He was a councillor to Henry VIII, and Lord High Chancellor of England October 1529-16 May 1532. More opposed the King's separation from the Catholic Church, and refused to acknowledge Henry as Supreme Head of the Church of England and the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. After refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy, he was convicted of treason and beheaded.,6 July 1535. More was beatified by Pope Leo XIII with John Fisher and 52 other English Martyrs on 29 December 1886 and canonised, with Fisher, on 19 May 1935 by Pope Pius XI.
