He was educated at Preston Catholic College and entered the Society of Jesus on 7 September 1955 joining the novitiate at Harlaxton. After a year’s juniorate at Manresa House in Roehampton, Rigby studied philosophy at Heythrop College in 1958 and then Modern Languages at Campion Hall in Oxford. In 1964 Rigby completed a year’s regency at Stonyhurst College. He returned to Heythrop to study theology and was ordained in his native Preston on 6 July 1968.

After completing his studies at Heythrop, Rigby was appointed to the Guyana Mission and taught for two years at St Stanislaus College in Georgetown. In 1971 he completed his Jesuit formation with a tertianship at St Beuno’s. Rigby returned to Guyana to teach at St Stanislaus College. He taught French and Religious Education, and also served as superior of Brickdam community in Georgetown. In 1980 Rigby commenced his work in the Guyanese interior, serving as parish priest at St Ignatius, Lethem, and as superior of the Rupununi District. He worked in the interior at Kurukabaru and Lethem until 1992 when was appointed Regional Superior of Guyana succeeding Fr Malcolm Rodrigues SJ.

After serving a six-year term as Superior, Rigby returned to England on sabbatical leave. Although Fr Rigby returned to Guyana to the Rupununi district, his health deteriorated rapidly curtailing his work as head of the new Amerindian apostolate. He returned to London in 2001, where it was confirmed that he had cancer. During the final few months of his life, he lived at Jesuit Missions in Wimbledon.

Fr Rigby died at St Anthony’s Hopsital in Cheam on 10 June 2001. His Requiem Mass was held at St Wilfrid’s in Preston followed by an internment in the Jesuit plot at Preston Cemetery.
