Brown was born in Milngavie, Glasgow, on 14 August 1913. He was educated in Genoa, Southampton, Plymouth and finally at Mount St Mary’s College in Derbyshire. He entered the Society of Jesus on 7 September 1931 joining the novitiate at Roehampton.

Brown began the usual course of Philosophy at Heythrop in 1935. During his regenecy, he taught at St John’s Beaumont for three years and at Barlbrough for one year. In 1942 Brown returned to Heythrop to study Theology and was ordained there in his third year on 12 September 1945. He completed his tertianship at St Beuno’s in 1946.

On the completion of his formation, Brown was sent to join the mission in what was then British Guiana. He was given charge of the parish at Malgretout where he remained for six years. After a year spent at Port Mourant, Brown was given charge of the parish at Suddie in 1954. After five years in this position, Brown joined the staff of the Cathedral in Georgetown, where he had responsibility for the prison chaplaincy and for directing the Apostleship of Prayer. In the 1960s he worked variously at La Plaisance, at the Sacred Heart in Georgetown and at St Pius X.

In 1968 Brown was appointed to the Guyanese interior to serve at Lethem and Kurikabaru. In 1969, however, all Jesuit priests were expelled from the interior by the Guyanese government. Brown was eventually able to return to his station in the interior. After a period of leave at home in England, Brown was appointed to the Sand Creek mission in 1974. In 1976, he once again returned to the parish of Malgretout. Ill health forced Brown to return to London in 1980, where he was based at St Ignatius in Stamford Hill for four years. In 1985, in spite of on-going ill health – Brown had become blind in one eye and severely crippled – he returned to Guyana to work at the Santa Rosa mission.

As Brown’s health deteriorated his duties were increasingly confined to work in Georgetown in and around the Cathedral. He died at St Joseph’s Mercy Hospital on 15 April 2005 and was buried at the Jesuit mausoleum in Georgetown.
